1. Please tell us about yourself. <\/strong><\/p>\n

I’m Raoul Camion (of course, it’s not my real name), I’m 40 years old and I live in Vielsalm, a (very) small city in the Belgium Ardennes with my wife Cindy, my little son of 9 years old, Toto, my two cats (one is a complete psychopath, he’s the Charles Manson of the cats) and all the other people who are living in the Ardennes too.<\/p>\n

I started to work 20 years ago as an imagesetter operator (Linotronic). I then carried out several trades in the \u00ab\u00a0traditional\u00a0\u00bb photoengraving (\u00a0scanner\u00a0 operator, phototypesetter, …)\"\"<\/a> before working as a freelance graphic designer.<\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

I thus learned the trade \u201con the heap\u201d without having particular formation.<\/p>\n

Je m\u2019appelle Raoul Camion (Bien s\u00fbr ce n\u2019est pas mon vrai nom), j\u2019ai 40 ans et je vis \u00e0 Vielsalm, une (tr\u00e8s) petite ville des Ardennes Belges avec ma femme Cindy, mon petit gar\u00e7on de 9 ans, Toto, mes deux chats (dont un est psychopathe, c\u2019est le Charles Manson des chats) et tous les autres gens qui vivent en Ardennes aussi.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai commenc\u00e9 \u00e0 travailler il y a pr\u00e8s de 20 ans de cela en tant qu\u2019op\u00e9rateur sur insoleuse num\u00e9rique (Linotronic). J\u2019ai ensuite effectu\u00e9 plusieurs m\u00e9tiers dans la photogravure \u201ctraditionnelle\u201d (scan\u00e9riste, photo-composeur, metteur au net,…) avant d\u2019opter pour un statut de graphiste freelance.<\/p>\n

J\u2019ai donc appris le m\u00e9tier \u201csur le tas\u201d sans avoir de formation particuli\u00e8re.<\/p>\n

2. What is the design industry like in the Belgium?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Design industry in Belgium is mainly based in Brussels (the capital) and also in the North, the Dutch-speaking part of the country, far away from where I live.<\/p>\n

L\u2019industrie du design en Belgique est majoritairement bas\u00e9e \u00e0 Bruxelles (la capitale) ainsi qu\u2019au Nord dans la partie N\u00e9erlandophone du pays, assez loin d\u2019o\u00f9 je vis donc.<\/p>\n

3. Which of your designs are your favorites and why?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like the logos that are not too serious. I like also the logos with 3D which keep them aspect of depth even when they are reduced to only one color.<\/p>\n

J’aime les logos qui ne sont pas trop \u00ab\u00a0s\u00e9rieux\u00a0\u00bb. J’aime aussi les logos r\u00e9alis\u00e9s en 3D qui gardent cet aspect de mise\u00a0 en perspective m\u00eame lorsqu\u2019il sont r\u00e9duit \u00e0 une seule couleur.<\/p>\n

4. Who\/what are some of the biggest influences on your design <\/strong>\"\"<\/a>work?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Pfiou …<\/p>\n

Rick Griffin, Neville Brody, David Carson, Gilbert and George, Joshua Davis, John Maeda, 123Klan, Designers Republic, Eboy, David Lanham, ….<\/p>\n

One of my favorite image remains the cover \u00abUnknown pleasures\u00bb from Joy Division. Designer Peter Saville is is often credited to have created it, but, in the fact, it’s the drummer,
\nStephen Morris who suggested to use this image (It’s a representation of the first discovered pulsar wave).<\/p>\n

I really like the cold, mathematic aspect of this picture.<\/p>\n

Une de mes image pr\u00e9f\u00e9r\u00e9e reste la pochette d\u2019Unknown pleasures de Joy Division. Le designer Peter Saville est souvent cr\u00e9dit\u00e9 pour avoir r\u00e9alis\u00e9 cette pochette mais, dans les fait, c\u2019est le batteur Stephen Morris qui a sugg\u00e9r\u00e9 d\u2019utiliser cette image (qui est en fait un repr\u00e9sentation de l\u2019onde \u00e9mise par le premier pulsar d\u00e9couvert).<\/p>\n

J\u2019aime beaucoup l\u2019aspect froid, math\u00e9matique de cette image.<\/p>\n

5. How do you come up with ideas for concepts after you read a buyer’s creative brief?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ideally, that has to go very quickly, by association of ideas. Also, I have always a synonyms dictionary\u00a0 by the hand to find an unexpected angle for a specific term.<\/p>\n

I also like to work with combinations of simple and, yes, expected symbols to create something new, even if that reduces the field of possibilities<\/p>\n

Id\u00e9alement, cela doit aller tr\u00e8s vite, par association d\u2019id\u00e9e, j\u2019ai aussi toujours sous la main un dictionnaire de synonymes.<\/p>\n

J\u2019aime bien de travailler par assemblage de symboles simples, m\u00eame si cela r\u00e9duit le champs des possibles.<\/p>\n


\n6. Mac or PC? <\/strong><\/p>\n

Mac, of courses, but I don’t want to\u00a0 create polemics with that (and anyone knows that PC users have a smaller dick)<\/p>\n

Mac bien s\u00fbr, mais je ne veux pas pol\u00e9miquer la dessus (et\u00a0 tout le monde sait que les utilisateurs PC ont des plus petites bites).<\/p>\n

7. What is your dream design project?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I like to work on series, like icon or pictogram collections, with a specified format, a reduced color scheme and restrictives guidelines.<\/p>\n

The main work is than to define a process, strict rules that we tent to applie on the whole serie.<\/p>\n

After, I wrack my brains to put all elements into those pre established canvas, it’s like resolve word-crossing or sudoku.<\/p>\n

It’s more a methodologie work than a creative one but I find satisfaction in that.<\/p>\n

J\u2019aime bien travailler sur des s\u00e9ries, comme des collections d’ic\u00f4nes ou de pictogrammes, avec un\u00a0 format donn\u00e9, une gamme de couleurs r\u00e9duites, des guidelines assez restrictives.<\/p>\n

Le travail principale est alors de d\u00e9finir un processus, des r\u00e8gles strictes que l’on va appliquer \u00e0 l’ensemble de la s\u00e9rie,.<\/p>\n

Apr\u00e8s, c’est un peu comme de faire un mot-crois\u00e9 ou de r\u00e9soudre un sudoku, on doit se casser la t\u00eate pour faire rentrer les \u00e9l\u00e9ments dans ces canvas pr\u00e9-\u00e9tablis.<\/p>\n

C’est alors plus un travail de m\u00e9thodologie qu’un travail vraiment cr\u00e9atif mais j’y trouve mon compte.<\/p>\n

8. What are your favorite websites for inspiration or learning about
\ngraphic design?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Honestly, I don’t surf very much on graphic websites and I haven’t really favorite ones.<\/p>\n

Honn\u00eatement, je surfe tr\u00e8s peu sur les site de graphisme. et je n\u2019ai pas vraiment de site favoris.<\/p>\n


\n9. Please describe your typical work day.<\/strong><\/p>\n

When I’m (really) courageous, I wake up at 06h30 and I do an half hour of sport, I press fresh orange juice, I set the table for breakfast and then I start to work, serene, motivated and trusting.<\/p>\n

The rest of the time (about 28 days\/month), I wake up too late, I drink to much coffee and then I groan because of coffee makes me too nervous and I cant’ concentrate myself\u00a0 anymore, and I finish the day with the half off the things that I previously scheduled.<\/p>\n

Quand je suis (vraiment) courageux, je me l\u00e8ve \u00e0 06h30 et je fais une demi-heure de gym, je presse des orange, je dresse la table du d\u00e9jeuner puis je me mets au travail, serein, motiv\u00e9 et confiant.<\/p>\n

Le reste du temps (genre 28 jours par mois), je me l\u00e8ve en retard, je bois trop de caf\u00e9s et puis je r\u00e2le parce que \u00e7a m\u2019a rendu trop nerveux et que je n\u2019arrive plus \u00e0 me concentrer, et je termine la journ\u00e9e en ayant pas faits la moiti\u00e9 des choses que je voulais faire.<\/p>\n

10. What are the most challenging and rewarding aspects of being a
\ngraphic designer?<\/strong><\/p>\n

Having the feeling of being paid to have fun and especially, working from my home without the stress of big cities and exacting working days.<\/p>\n

Avoir l\u2019impression d\u2019\u00eatre pay\u00e9 pour s\u2019amuser et puis, surtout, travailler de chez soi sans subir le stress des grande ville et des journ\u00e9e de travaille harassantes.<\/p>\n


\n11. If you weren\u2019t designing, what would you be doing?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I would run a toy store, I would learn tap dance and I would disguise as Venom to\u00a0 give free hugs at a beer feast (but I will wear a pink mantle for a better conviviality).<\/p>\n

J\u2019aurais un magasin de jouet, j\u2019apprendrais \u00e0 faire des claquettes et je me d\u00e9guiserai en Venom pour faire des free-hugs \u00e0 la f\u00eate de la bi\u00e8re (mais je mettrai aussi une cape rose pour que cela soit plus convivial).<\/p>\n

12. What do you do with your free time?<\/strong><\/p>\n

I take coffee with the olds of my village, I’m cooking also from time to time (not every day, please, stop dreaming), when it’s a sunny day, I walk to school to get back my son.<\/p>\n

We do also hiking every week in family.<\/p>\n

In summer, we go often to the beach to do kite (all my apologizes to the girl I trampled last time).<\/p>\n

In the french-speaking belgium, we have a very cool public utilitie called \u00abDiscobus\u00bb, it’s like an itinerant \u00ablibrary\u00bb bus for the music and movies. So I listen many many music and I’m also a fan of US and UK TV show like \u00abSix feet und\"\"<\/a>er\u00bb, \u00abEntourage\u00bb, \u00abRome\u00bb, \u00ab30th Rock\u00bb, \u00abThe Office\u00bb, \u00abArrested Development\u00bb, …)<\/p>\n

Je bois le caf\u00e9 avec les vieux du village, je cuisine aussi de temps en temps (pas tous les jours, ne r\u00eavez pas); quand il fait beau, je vais rechercher mon petit gar\u00e7on \u00e0 pied \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9cole pour faire une ballade.<\/p>\n

On fait aussi beaucoup de randonn\u00e9es en famille.<\/p>\n

En \u00e9t\u00e9,\u00a0 on part souvent faire du cerf-volant \u00e0 la mer (toutes mes excuses \u00e0 la fille que j\u2019ai pi\u00e9tin\u00e9e la derni\u00e8re fois).<\/p>\n

En Belgique francophone, nous avons un service public tr\u00e8s chouette appel\u00e9 le \u00ab\u00a0Discobus\u00a0\u00bb, c’est un peu comme un bus- biblioth\u00e8que itin\u00e9rant pour la musique et le cin\u00e9ma. Donc, j’\u00e9coute beaucoup, beaucoup de musique et je suis aussi un fan de\u00a0 s\u00e9ries t\u00e9l\u00e9 anglaise et am\u00e9ricaine. (Six feet under, Entourage, Rome, 30 Rock, The Office, Arrested Development, …)<\/p>\n

I’m Raoul Camion (of course, it’s not my real name), I’m 40 years old and I live in Vielsalm, a (very) small city in the Belgium Ardennes with my wife Cindy, my little son of 9 years old, Toto, my two cats (one is a complete psychopath, he’s the Charles Manson of the cats) and all the other people who are living in the Ardennes too. I started to work 20 years ago as an imagesetter operator (Linotronic).
